Have Great Relationships with In-laws

There is a fine line to tread when it comes to having a great relationship with in-laws. However, it is important to remember that they have had a major role to play to make your spouse what he or she is today. And of course, you love your husband or wife, isn’t it? Here are some simple tips to incorporate in your life and have a great relationship with your in-laws:
Show courtesy:
Don’t start on the wrong foot. Showing common curtesy and respect can go a long way to ensure that you started on the right path. After all they are extended family and after the guards are dropped, it is about being family.
Love and acceptance:
It is important to know that they have loved your spouse from the day he/she was born. You need to accept the fact that sometimes, blood is thicker than water. However, accept, love and celebrate them for the encouragement and support for your spouse. Treating them as part of your family will make it much easier to get along with them, even if it requires a little more effort.
Amicably resolve conflict:
One of the key aspects of resolving the conflict is to allow your spouse to talk with them as they are part of his/her family. They know how to talk with them, putting things across that will lead to an amicable resolution of the situation. Instead of letting conflict build-up, resolve it quickly.
Do not differentiate:
Let ‘her’ parents and ‘his’ parents become ‘our’ parents. And that is the key to a good relationship with both sets of in-laws. Love and respect them and give your children a chance to enjoy with their grandparents.
Give relationships time:
It takes time to accept and integrate with the family. Even if there has been conflict, time heals the differences. Take a step forward and they will take the extended hand to make peace. After all, they brought you or your spouse into this world and would love to remain a part of his/her world.
